Patrick Lane's works are something I've neglected in my reading list, but after reading Lorna Crozier's Through the Garden: A Love Story (With Cats), I had to order There is a Season from my local library. And I'm so glad I did.
This is a no-holds-barred memoir showing me the child, his years of alcoholism and eventual sobriety. This man with little education grew into one of Canada's best-known, award-winning poets. His language is musical, and the imagery is often vivid. No matter how often I read and reread the pages, I caught a fresh nuance and the story never tires. One of the lines continually runs through my mind, a foreshadowing: "Pray God, there may be many more days, I whisper."

Lane would survive only fourteen more years. But his legacy and inspiration will last forever.
