Do I Know What I Think I Know?

The lines blur. Memory-history-history- memory. Which is which? Which is truth? A button tied to a string spinning front to back, back to front, never goes full circle. The Rankean Revolution says, "history is an objective, value-free, and ideologically impartial scientific endeavour." It says

memory is "distorted, emotionally contaminated, and subjective ." Maybe they're just opposite sides of the same coin, needing both to make the whole. Maybe not.


(Well, d'you see, it was like the book says, but it wasn't like that, also.)


History is staged, edited, and rewritten to the best effect. What I think I know, I don't. What I see is not the whole.
